The 2020/21 Board of Directors determined in outlining our guiding principles that it is essential to our community that we preserve and protect our commonly owned facilities as well as our members.

Members of the Facilities Planning Committee along with former and current Board Directors, received comments from several members over the years regarding the lack of lighting at the community mailboxes. Many members raised concerns over safety and security due to the lack of lighting. 

Mailbox Repairs

Several years ago, the mailboxes were replaced when the United States Postal Service approved replacing the units to reduce vandalism. Currently, the concrete slabs are being replaced to assist with improving the members' safety while accessing their mailboxes. Installation of solar-powered light fixtures would be the final step towards improving member safety and security at these locations. 

Adding Solar-Powered Lighting 

In 2016, solar-powered motion-activated fixtures were installed at the mailboxes located at Sorrel Lane and Blackhorse. The members who use these mailboxes were collectively satisfied with the installation. At the Regular Session Board Meeting on October 6, 2020 the Board requested staff to install solar-powered lights at the following mailbox locations as recommended by the Facilities Planning Committee: 

  • Longhorn Drive at Appaloosa Court
  • Cruise Circle at Continental Drive

The purpose of installing the fixtures at these two additional locations was to determine if there would be any environmental impact. Installation of the light fixtures was complete by early December 2020.

Moving Forward

The installation of these motion-activated solar-powered lights that will provide a sense of security and safety to a majority of the members will cost approximately $21 per member, this would be a one-time expense, not annual. Funds are currently available in the Capital Improvement Fund, should the Board decide to install solar-powered lights at the remaining mailbox locations community-wide.

The Board of Directors is interested in receiving comments from members regarding the motion-activated solar-powered lights. We are especially interested in receiving comments from the members who use the mailboxes where the lights are already installed.
