Member of the Month

May's Member of the Month is Jack Wamsley. Jack has been a fixture in Canyon Lake for over 40 years, contributing enormously to the development of our community. When appointed to the Board of Directors, he became a driving force, spearheading the campaign to make Canyon Lake a city and subsequently serving as a charter member of the City Council in 1990 for a total of three terms. Jack was also instrumental in several upgrades and projects in Canyon Lake, including installing the fuel station at campground, leading the charge for the emergency golf cart at the golf course, and assisting in the golf course irrigation project. Characterized as a "bulldog" when getting things done, Jack is a consummate volunteer and an exemplary member of the community.

Thank You to Our Board Directors

Join us in thanking Joe Kamashian, Alex Cook, and Jeff Bill for their volunteer work as Board Directors over their two-year terms from 2023 to 2025! Each embody the heart and spirit of true volunteers, committing roughly 800 hours a year of volunteer service to our community. As liaisons to Canyon Lake committees in addition to their work as Board Directors, they are instrumental in shaping the community and ensuring voices in our little bit of paradise are heard. Thank you, gentlemen, for all of your hard work and your selfless commitment to improving our community.

Golden Algae Lake Conditions Update

Preliminary test results show low levels of golden algae (prymnesium parvum) in Canyon Lake, which may be contributing to the brownish tint recently observed in the water. Golden algae can produce toxins that affect organisms with gills. In humans, however, the potential health risks are generally milder and may include irritation, respiratory problems, and digestive issues (this occurs by ingesting water or algal blooms). Additional water testing and fish toxicology results are in progress. Full results are expected by the end of May, with fish-specific findings coming in July. The lake is not closed, and we are still at green flag boating conditions.

As always, the Canyon Lake POA and EVMWD will continue to perform water quality testing prior to big holidays, including the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. We will continue to update the community as we receive updates and test results.

If you observe any dead fish, please do not dispose of them. Instead, contact the Canyon Lake POA's Operations Team at 951-244-6841 x510. Operations will coordinate with the Canyon Lake POA's Marine Patrol to collect and document locations and quantities for further analysis. For more information, visit our Lake Conditions page.

Who to Call for Water Quality Concerns

Water quality in Canyon Lake can be affected by a variety of issues, including temperature, stormwater run-off, lake turnover, algae blooms, and changes in water clarity. Lake Elsinore and San Jacinto Watersheds Authority (LESJWA) is currently conducting additional water testing and analyzing samples taken from some of the fish. Generally, fish mortality is due to reduced or diffused oxygen levels in lake water, which can be caused by lake turnover or algae blooms. We will report back to the community when any test results are shared with us.

In the meantime, several different entities are responsible for different aspects of water quality in and for Canyon Lake. These include the Canyon Lake POA, LESJWA, Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD), and the City of Canyon Lake. For details on the responsibilities of each and how to contact them for your specific concern, visit our Who to Call for Water Quality Concerns page.
